USS Saratogo

Specifications - Saratogo

Summary

The Odyssey Class follows the primary, secondary, and twin nacelles design that has become the standard hull arrangement for Starfleet ships. These ships also have the stream lined design that allows the ship's warp filed to be more energy efficient and lest damaging to the fabric of space.

The primary hull houses the ship's main bridge module at the top of the primary hull. The primary hull also houses the medical and science labs. The bulk of the ship's crew and guest quarters are located in the primary hull. The secondary engineering and warp core are also housed in the primary hull. This secondary core can be used as an auxiliary power source for the ship or to power the primary hull warp coils while the primary hull is operating in independent flight mode. With these warp coils the primary hull is able to cruise at warp 6 or maintain an emergency speed of 8.89 for up to twelve hours. There are two of the ship's four impulse engines that are housed within the primary hull allowing this hull to reach a top sub-light speed of 1/3 the speed of light. The ship's single shuttle bay is also housed within the primary hull

The two hulls are connected by two neck structures that extend from the ventral surface of the primary hull and attach to the dorsal surface of the secondary hull.

The secondary hull houses the ships main warp core. The Odyssey class carries a single Aquarius Class escort cruiser in a dedicated docking cradle at the aft most point of the secondary hull between the connect points between the secondary hull and the warp nacelle support pylons. The ship's second pair of impulse engines are housed within the support pylons. These pylons hold the twin nacelles so they flank the bridge module and the ramscoops have a clear forward line of sight. Major ship systems such as the main deflector dish and long range sensor systems are housed within the secondary hull.

The Odyssey Class is equipped with Regenerative Shielding System to protect the ship from hazardous conditions. These ships are also equipped with nineteen Type XII Phaser arrays spread across the dorsal and ventral surface of the primary and secondary hull. There are also six torpedo launchers where four of the launchers cover the forward firing arch and the other two cover the aft firing arch.

Weapons & Defensive Systems

Shields Regenerative Shielding Systems: The Regenerative Shielding System is an ingenious use of current shielding technology in a fashion that was not really deemed necessary during the peaceful years before the Borg were contacted and the Dominion War broke out. Simply stated, the shielding system uses extra shield generators to act as "backups" for the primary shield generators on the ship.

Under red alert conditions the primary shield generators are brought online from standby mode and the secondary generators are brought to full standby mode. When the active shield generators reach a weakness threshold of forty-five percent the back up generators are automatically brought to full operator mode and take over the shield generation duties while the primary generators are powered back to standby mode for recharge or fully offline for any necessary repairs. This constant swapping of duties before too much damage has been sustained to a single generator means that survival rates were increased by more than seventy percent for those ships that deployed the Regenerative Shielding System during the Dominion War.

Other technologies were also introduced with the new shield matrix including countermeasures to increase effectiveness versus the Breen, Dominion, and Borg weaponry which Starfleet had been ill-equipped to handle before.

Auxiliary Craft

Shuttlebays 1
Shuttles Shuttles: 10
The Type 11 shuttlecraft is a new replacement that seamlessly blends the need for personnel and cargo shuttles into one small craft. They are designed to add an extra capability and flexibility to the larger cargo craft, while still maintaining the creature comforts of standard personnel shuttles.

Bio-Neural gel packs have been included in the Type 11 as standard, a step up from the Type 10 shuttlepod computer system which offers the gel packs solely as an upgrade. Other technologies added are mostly centered around the warp core and nacelle systems.

The Type 11 is equipped with 2 phaser banks, which can be used as point defense, but are largely ineffective against any craft larger than the shuttle. As with most shuttles, standard operations do not call for weaponry. However, given the more volatile nature of the galaxy under which this craft was built, it was decided that she should at least pack a bit of a punch in case her crew should have to "gun and run" from an escalated situation.

Workbees: 2
Work Bees can carry out general maintenance, inspection, and or construction tasks. Standard operation guide lines call for the pilot to operate the work be for an eight hour shift before returning to the docking bay for pilot rotation. In emergency situations the Work Bees can support the pilot for up to sixteen hours. The Work Bee is designed to operate in a micro gravity environment, Either in planetary orbit or within the close proximity to a star base, fleet yards or other such facility. The Work Bee is not designed to operate within a planet's atmosphere. Studies have proven that a Work Bee could survive a planetary landing but would not be able return to orbit under its own power.
Fighters None
Runabouts Runabouts: 4
The Arrow-class runabout is the ultimate successor to the Danube-class as she was rapidly aging in her role as Starfleet's leading runabout class. The design teams of Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards set out to design a successor that would be just as efficient, flexible and dependable, while still incorporating the newest technologies, a much more efficient and powerful power supply, proper landing gear, and more modern warp designs.

The Arrow was built with modification and modular upgrades in mind, with the result that any two Arrows on a given ship may be remarkably different in performance. Popular configurations include a survey package, which replaces the torpedo launchers with a probe deployment system and upgrades the onboard science equipment to allow a full science team aboard, and a Marine deployment configuration which strips down the runabout and augments its life support so that it can carry as many as fifty combat loaded Marines over short distances. With the time required for altering the configuration of an Arrow measured in hours rather than days, a larger starship which has sufficient notice will often tailor the capabilities of their runabouts to the needs that might arise during a mission.
